CONCLUSION
In addition to reading the “Pilgrims Progress”, the programme televised on Sky TV, ICB (Channel 766) on Saturday, 27/10/07 at 19.00 hrs titled “The Pilgrim Progress” convinced one further that all the characters in the books are the individuals John Bunyan encountered during his pilgrimage as a Christian. This is true today in every Christian’s journey.
The ups and downs, trails and tribulations of life encountered are necessary for the spiritual growth of a Christian as Charles Spurgeon pointed out in his book. Charles Spurgeon elaborated that, the Evangelist endanger Pilgrim’s journey (which is usually the case) by putting the getting rid of the burden too far from commencement of the pilgrimage for it would have been much easier for Pilgrim to go through the Slough of Despond. On the positive note, the experience gave more confidence, strength and determination to reach the Celestial City as he cried out for help, and according to Charles Spurgeon, the best place to get a sense of sin is at the foot of the cross.
Still on evangelizing; rather than steal members from other churches, Spurgeon emphasizes the aim of a Christian church should be to win souls direct from the world. One would not hesitate to add the saying “Charity begins at home”. That is to start from people closest to one. Christians must fight a good fight of faith, not submitting to circumstances and conditions of life. Christians are encouraged to carry their cross bravely as pilgrims and strangers in this life, making their way home.
